6 Ways to Organize Your Work from Home Career and Life

Unless you are organized you may fail at working from home. There was a day (years ago) that I jumped in head-first. I didn’t organize anything. In fact, I had sticky notes all over my computer, desk, wall, you name it, and before I knew it those sticky notes magically disappeared and I was lost.

 

I forgot what client wanted what. I forgot what was due and for whom. I forgot what I wrote, and what I needed to write. I forgot it all! Well, that was the day I realized I needed to get organized.

 

I have tried quite a few organizational techniques, and I am going to share with you the one that works for me and is still working for me today.

 

First I would like to say that a lot of people create something on their computer to keep them organized. That does NOT work for me. I am on my computer so often that the last thing I want to do is spend time on my computer NOT making money.

 

 

Why You Need To Get and Stay Organized

Working-at-home and not being organized is a recipe for disaster! If you aren’t organized how in the hell will you know what is due when?

Imagine this scenario… you are at an appointment, and all of a sudden you get a notification that you are wanted on Skype by a client of yours.

 

Here are a few tips that I use to organize my work-at-home and home life…

Buy Office Supplies When On Sale.

Back to school sales are my favorite. Every year I stock up on what I think I will need for a year. I mean come on, how can you beat a brand-new notebook for 1 penny?

 

 

Get a Dry-Erase Board.

Every night before I go to bed, I will write on my board what I have to do the following day. Having a visual reminder helps me not forget something important.

 

Reorganize and Bundle Errands to Save Time

Select one day of the week to run ALL your errands if you can manage it. I try to schedule all doctor, dentist, etc. appointments, and grocery shopping all on the same day.

If you don’t bundle your errands currently, I am willing to bet you will be surprised at how much time you save the rest of the week not having to worry about going here or going there!

 

What If You Have Small Children at Home?

What do you do if you have small children at home while you are trying to work from home? I have many children, and when I started my online career my children were much younger than they are now.

Heck, I didn’t even have my last two children yet! If you don’t think you can still work-at-home while you have children at home, I am here to tell you it can be done.

Try to create a workspace away from your children. I tend to set up my office in my bedroom. This provides me a place to work, and lets my children know when I am at my desk; it’s time for mommy to work. Smaller children do wonderful with quiet activities. After all, you gotta keep the kiddos busy too…or Lord knows what they can, and will get into, LOL!

I purchased board games, playing cards, video games, etc. Think of QUIET activities your children will enjoy while you are working.

Why It’s Important To Adjust Your Schedule When Needed

All the planning in the world won’t stop sudden changes from happening in life. If something comes up, and you need to adjust your schedule please do so.

Don’t stress over having to adjust your schedule. Having the freedom to adjust your schedule is a benefit of working at home.

 

Why You Should Clean and Prepare Your Work Area In Advance

I don’t know about you, but if I sit down to a dirty work station, I cannot concentrate. Before I know it my mind has wandered off thinking about organizing my paperwork, etc., and my productivity stalls to a halt.

Organizing, and cleaning your work station in advance not only relieves your mind of tasks that need to be done, but it also increases your productivity.
